What the documents mean for you
1984 can switch off or terminate your service with or without notice if it judges your content illegal, unethical or harmful. It logs your IP and visits, may keep network logs for any length of time, and discloses data to authorities and payment processors.
Opening an account is not anonymous: the terms state that your name, active e-mail, telephone number and payment details are recorded, the privacy policy adds full name, billing data and, for customers living in Iceland, the kennitala national identification number, and you must warrant that all of it is accurate and kept current. For a GDPR data request they verify who you are by calling the number held in their customer system.
Identity data is taken at sign-up, not triggered by any transaction check: your name, active e-mail address, active telephone number and payment details, plus the Icelandic national ID number (kennitala) if you live in Iceland. You must warrant the information is accurate, complete and current. For data access requests they call the phone number on file to confirm it is you, and they release account access information to anyone who supplies your name, e-mail, user name, payment details and PIN, or to anyone with a valid court order.
Warnings
If your account is cancelled for violating the terms, your personal information may be retained indefinitely so that 1984 can stop you using the service again. The same applies where it decides illegal activity occurred.
The cookie policy says "We do not use cookies to track visitors", while the privacy policy says 1984 uses cookies to tailor advertisements and combines web beacons with cookies to track activity on its website.
Customers residing in Iceland hand over their kennitala, the national identification number, as part of account data.
Backups on shared and Managed VPS hosting are best effort, taken when it suits 1984, kept 30 days, and not taken at all once your sites and databases pass 30 GB. 1984 takes no responsibility for their quality or integrity.
If your personal data is erased under GDPR, it is deleted irrevocably within 30 days of the service ending, and after that no refund can be made.
